On September 30th, San Miguel High School celebrated its 12th Annual Heritage Festival. Although the Festival has been a yearly tradition at San Miguel since 2009, the COVID shutdown last year prevented the festival from occurring. The yearlong gap made this year’s celebration all the more special, as students, faculty, family and friends gathered at San Miguel (with COVID precautions in place) to attend the Festival.
The Heritage Festival was the brain-child of members of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica at San Miguel. Originally, the goal of the Festival was to celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage but as the years passed, the Festival expanded to include countries from all over the world. Today, the Festival consists of student groups representing different countries through dance, traditional clothing, and more. At this year’s event, Spain, Italy, France, The Dominican Republic, Brasil, Mexico, Lebanon, Columbia, Fiji, Chile, Japan, Puerto Rico, South Korea and Venezuela were all represented.
“There are many aspects I love about the Heritage Festival. For example, our students' commitment, the joy of preparation, and the way we are able to bring all community members to our Festival. You can see the good vibes during the rehearsals and all the effort they put in to have a successful event,” said Rosales.

Mrs. Maria Rosales, Spanish teacher, Spanish Department Chair and co-founder of the Heritage Festival, loves the way that the Festival showcases students’ leadership skills, creativity, generosity, care for each other and, in some cases, religiosity.
