The Pag-asa Club at San Miguel High School is another example of the Lasallian tradition of reaching out to help others.
The mission of Club Pag-asa is to provide scholarship funds, educational, or other needed materials for the Bahay Pag-asa Youth Center in the Philippines. These are residential and educational centers for youth in conflict with the law operated by the De La Salle Brothers of the Philippines and their colleagues.
And the Chair of this club, Senior Jocelyn Wong, shows the type of leadership and commitment typical of student life here at San Miguel High School.
Jocelyn joined the Pag-asa Club her Freshman year when she heard about it in her Religion class. She is always drawn to service-based clubs because she likes to help people and she wants to become a doctor.
Since her nana was born in the Philippines but passed away when she was young, Jocelyn thought this would be a nice link to get to know about her, and her grandmother’s, heritage and the Philippine culture a bit better.
This year, the Pag-asa Club has been busy since September when they did a donation drive “Christmas in September'' where each grade was asked to donate specific items, which would be sent to the Philippines in time for Christmas. Between donations from Sister Mary Ann and all the students the fundraiser went really well. The club raised and sent off more items than they needed.
The second fundraiser the club is running is selling snacks after school in the courtyard every Tuesday after school. This too is going well and they have raised over $80 each Tuesday thus far. The funds will be used to purchase more inventory [parents can earn volunteer hours by donating snacks] and help the children in the Philippines and San Miguel High School Twin School in Kenya: Child Discovery Centre.
