All Souls Day ~ All Souls Mass

Father Paul Wilkin, SDS of the Salvatorians walked into the San Miguel High School All Souls Day mass on November 2, 2021 and the entire assembly knew something would be different.

With his new, richly embroidered purple and gold chasuble and a glimmer of humor in his eyes he started off announcing all the "firsts."

"It's the first time I'm wearing this vestments. This is our first mass in this space [with COVID protocols firmly in place]. This is the first time I've been here."

And then he led us all in a practice of "Amens" and "Alleluias" with increasing effort to rally these Tucson-based students, still a little sleepy and still a little chilled from the crisp November morning air.

Fr. Paul tore up 1/4th of his homily when he confirmed the Sophomores were all working at their CWSP jobs saying, “I guess I will not need their part of the homily", and then proceeded to tear off another half when he confirmed everyone already learned about All Saints Day in their religion classes.

He proceeded to lead us through a sermon where all thought about those close to us who had departed and how we can continue to pray for them to continue to be closer to God.

Like many new priests, Father Paul came to his vocation from another life. He started as a graphic designer and after growing up the 7th of 8 in Cincinnati, OH, he established his own business. After several minutes of sharing our fondness for good ol' Skyline Chili, he talked about his long motorcycle touring on his 800cc 1994 Honda Pacific Coast.

At 57 years old, Fr. Paul is eager to continue missionary ministries. After spending part of his seminary studies (in 2017) in the Philippines with other religious orders, he was ready to continue to spread his wings and minister in Vietnam when the COVID19 pandemic broke out and prevented this. While he works hard with his missionary work in the States at San Xavier Mission and Most Holy Trinity Parishes, Fr. Paul will continue to bring those who are blessed to hear him closer to God, and some joy and humor along the way.
