FIRST things First - SMHS co-hosts Lego League Robotics Tournament

Six years ago a dynamic duo set about setting up San Miguel High School's robotics club and things have been operating in harmony since. With Brother Jack Henderson, San Miguel High's Biology instructor, handling the logistics and Mr. Demian Quiroz, the Physics teacher, handling the tech-side of things, this Robotics Club has been competing, hosting events, and making its mark on the Robotics scene. Three years ago, in 2018, San Miguel High was asked to Host the event with two-weeks notice and since then has been the host for the Tucson Qualifiers Tournament.

It's easy to see the influence of the various clubs both Br. Jack and Mr. Quiroz are involved in: Lego structures are populating tables amidst components for the Rocketry Club before giving way to the host of aquarium-based animals and reptiles. Machine tools placed outside classrooms in the 100 Building clue visitors into Tinkerbotics and Maker Space activities where students can get practice turning their visions from drawings into realities.

This year the school will be co-hosting the FIRST Lego League on Saturday, December 4th at The Gregory School, who are co-hosts.

Then SMHS is hosting the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Tournament at San Miguel High School. This tournament is just one small part of a worldwide FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) series of competitions. Teams doing well in the Tucson tournament will move on to state level championships.

Students will participate as Judges, Referees, and Pit-runners. You may notice Lego structures being built at the front desk and in Br. Jack's science room. These will be parts of the Table Fields that our school is creating for the tournament.
