Abundance with the Aquaponics

The aquaponics project is bursting with tomatoes and swiss chard!

We are ready for the San Miguel community to take as much as they can use so the fruits of this effort don't go to waste.

Swiss Chard

The swiss chard leaves cook down a bit like spinach, losing quite a bit of volume as it warms. It can be used in stir-frys and soups. And even the stems can be thrown in, adding a crunchy texture to any dish. Or, slice them thinly and put them in with items that need to be cooked a bit longer. Even with the January overnight freezes, the swiss chard did fine - and they will continue growing.

Tomatoes

The tomatoes took a bigger hit
during the freezing nights.

However, there are still a good number
of ripe tomatoes ready for harvest.

Freezes in Tucson seem to bring high winds and the protective covers didn't bade well.

There are also a lot of green tomatoes that will go bad if not used soon.

Finally, there are also some very small, hot, red peppers that are available along with some habaneros.

We are glad our SMHS community can harvest these foods from the project - just please don't pluck the dandelions - we are trying to grow them for our tortoise.
