Students Gain Work Experience, Access to Scholarship Opportunity Through
Tucson Country Club Corporate Partnership
For the four San Miguel students deployed as caddies at the Tucson Country Club (TCC) as part of the Youth Caddie Program, their job offers the opportunity not only to gain valuable work experience, but also to qualify for an Evans Scholarship through the Chick Evans Scholarship Program.
Steve Pearl (TCC President), John Orcutt (TCC Treasurer), Nancy Leslie, and John Morgan (Western Golf Association board members), worked to launch the Youth Caddie Program at the TCC in early 2021. Including four San Miguel students, the program has 25 participating caddies - all working to qualify for a Chick Evans Scholarship.
"The members of Tucson Country Club really appreciate having the youth caddies," says Leslie. "Not only do we enjoy playing golf more when we have a caddie but getting to know these outstanding young people has been a real pleasure. We are hoping that we can work with the caddies and have a San Miguel student be awarded an Evans scholarship in the near future.”
Like Ken Cook emphasizes in his Arizona Daily Star article covering TCC's Youth Caddie Program, a significant benefit of caddying at TCC is the opportunity for students to make and maintain relationships with Club and community members.
Laura Brown, prominent Tucson community member and TCC member, says this of her experience golfing with San Miguel caddies:
“I have had the enormous pleasure of having both Daniel and Izeah as caddies at the Tucson Country Club. Both young men are enthusiastic about their responsibilities as developing caddies and about gaining experience with members of our Club. I wish them both the best as they continue with their studies at San Miguel.”
Rene Huerta, San Miguel Corporate Work Study Program Coordinator and Transportation Manager, serves as San Miguel's coordinator with the TCC.
"Thank you to Tucson Country Club for this amazing partnership and all the opportunities provided to our San Miguel High School student workers and community," says Huerta. "It is a pleasure to work together to empower future leaders."
