Catholic Schools Week - Fe, Servicio, Excelencia

This week San Miguel High School hosted a number of activities where students could reflect on, and be proud of their Catholic education.

Here are some events, centered around our Five Lasallian Core Principles:

* Faith in the Presence of God. The Lasallian school nurtures belief in the living presence of God in our world. ... We had a mass with Bishop Kicanas, who gave a beautiful sermon that included these points:
  • Don’t major in minor things.
  • Smile more.
  • Be kind.
  • Don’t say ‘I don’t have time’ - there’s time for what matters.
  • Don’t be afraid to admit mistakes.
  • Don’t carry a grudge around with you.
  • Last message: God loves you and wants the best for you
The other principles were honored in our students at our Awards Ceremony where students received certificates for achievement academically, for their work-study successes, and/or for their display of Lasallian Core Principles.
* Concern for the Poor and Social Justice. ...
* Respect for All Persons. ...
* Quality Education. ...
* Inclusive Community.

Our Lasallian Youth group, in collaboration with DEIB, has helped to craft small, meaningful ways to celebrate Catholic Schools Week as well:

Monday: To celebrate students, snacks were passed out next to Student Life after school.

Tuesday: To celebrate faculty and staff, posters were put up for those who have worked at San Miguel for 5+, 10+, or 15+ years.

Wednesday: To celebrate our stories below the surface, 4-5 students from each grade level wore black shirts. Then, on either Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, they shared a brief scenario for their "student" which was created by social-emotional counseling. Students then had the opportunity to reflect upon the stories shared.

Thursday: To celebrate the community, Mass was held during the school day. In the evening, the Viper awards ceremony recognized students along with their families for their academic, professional, and spiritual accomplishments.

Friday: To celebrate support staff, pan dulce was provided for the CWSP drivers. Sweet treats will be given to the maintenance and lunch teams later in the day.

While not flashy or extensive, the hope was that they honor all members of our school community while providing a reminder that our Lasallian, Catholic identity can be celebrated in an ongoing way throughout the year.

And we were honored to host students from Christian Brothers Sacramento as part of our El Otro Lado immersion program.
