College-Bound Updates!

Recognizing College Bound Seniors

At a special Senior Appreciation Lunch on Thursday, February 16th, we celebrated our seniors, 100% of whom have submitted college applications.

We are thrilled to share some updates from College Counseling including pictures from recent college visits.

 Grade 12

  • 151 total acceptances as of Feb. 15 (an increase of 24 since the Dec. update)
  • admission to Case Western Reserve University
  • 3 Dorrance Scholars semi-finalists
  • 47 seniors successfully met college application goal deadline and were treated to lunch from Olive Garden
  • Upcoming:
    • Continued celebration of seniors receiving acceptance into out-of-state schools

 Grades 9-11

  • All grade levels have now visited the University of Arizona. Due to COVID-19 interruptions, this was the first trip for many students. Some highlights from these visits:
    • W.A. Franke Honors College
    • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    • College of Engineering
    • College of Law
      • Co-hosted by alumnus Jesus Carranza (2019)
    • General Admissions Tour
    • Genetics Core Lab
      • Co-hosted by alumnus Jose Carranza (2012)
    • Main Library and CATalyst Studios
    • SMHS Alumni Panels
  • Junior Parent College Night
  • Upcoming
    • Juniors transition from SAT Prep Course to College Counseling for S-Period
    • Freshman/Sophomore Parent College Night Mar. 23
    • Continued application to summer pre-college programs

Although students were recognized specially during the Senior Appreciation Lunch, all San Miguel students are taking steps in the college-bound process. COVID interrupted some previously planned trips to the U of A, all San Miguel students have now visited the campus. Campus tours are a significant step for students as they visualize themselves in spaces that might have felt inaccessible before the visit.

All students will continue to work with the College Counseling department to develop college application checklists, research and apply for scholarships, and eventually, complete FAFSA forms and college applications.
